Andy Katz New Zealand: Sea Earth Sky USA Craig Potton 2006 0964980584 Hard Cover New New Andy Katz's camera has taken him on many journeys. The itineraries have varied from the lush wine country of California, France and Tuscany to the austere reality of vanishing cultures in Eastern Europe. Atiq Rahimi A Thousand Rooms of Dream and Fear Great Britain Random House 2006 009946196X Paper Back New New In his extraordinary novella Earth and Ashes (now a feature film), Atiq Rahimi distilled all the suffering of the Afghan people into the heart-breaking story of a grandfather seeking revenge for his daughter’s death. In his new novel, he once again uses his gift for economy to send the reader deep into the fractured mind and emotions of a country caught between religion and the political machinations of the world’s super powers. Farhad is a typical student, interested in wine, women and poetry, and negligent of the religious conservatism of his grandfather. But one night changes all that. It is 1979 and Afghanistan is in the early days of the pro-Soviet coup. Farhad goes out drinking with a friend who is about to flee to Pakistan. A few hours later he regains consciousness in a strange house, beaten and confused. At first he thinks he is dead. Then he begins to remember what happened. As his mind sifts through its memories, fears and hallucinations, and the outlines of reality start to harden, he realises that, if he is to escape the soldiers who wish to finish the job they started, he too must leave everything he loves behind him and find a way to get to Pakistan. Reminiscent of William Golding’s Pincher Martin in its use of an intense, repetitive vocabulary of powerful images, and for its chilling twist in the tail, this is a mesmerising book. To read it is to be plunged into the Afghan imagination and soul. Price:

Barry O'Donnell When Nelson had a Railway Schematics Ltd 0476011191 For almost eighty years New Zealand Railways operated a line that extended south from Nelson. The expectation of Nelsonians was that sooner, rather than later, their region would be connected to the rest of the South Island railway system as promised by various Governments. Construction delays, rugged terrain, acts of God, politics, and the development of road transport all conspired against that happening. For over forty years Glehope, a tiny settlement 59 miles from Nelson, was effectively the terminus of the railway, which after 1945 remained the only isolated section of the New Zealand Railways' network. This book tells the fascinating and frustrating story of the Nelson Section, and of the men and women who worked on the railway. The Government, having abandoned its promise to complete the connection, closed the railway in June 1954. A storm of local protest saw the railway offered a reprieve, but unable to attain the level of tonnage the Government required for it to remain open, the railway was finally closed in September 1955. Despite further protests - one of which made headlines on the other side of the world - the railway remained closed, and by December 1956 the Nelson Section had ceased to exist. Price:

Carl Hiaasen Skinny Dip Random House Publishing 0552772534 Chaz Perrone might be the only marine scientist in the world who doesn't know which way the Gulf Stream runs. But he's just found a way to make a fortune out of the Florida Everglades, and he's damned if anyone's going to stop him. So when he suspects that his wife, Joey, is going to get in his way, he takes her on an expensive anniversary cruise and pushes her overboard into the night-dark Atlantic. Unfortunately for Chaz, Joey survives the fall. Clinging to a bale of Jamaican pot, she manages to stay alive, and is plucked from the ocean by former cop, current loner, Mick Stranahan. But instead of rushing to the police and reporting her husband's crime, Joey decides to stay dead and (with Mick's help) screw with Chas until he screws himself. As Joey haunts and taunts her homicidal husband; as Chaz's cold blooded cohorts in crime grow uneasy with his increasingly erratic behaviour; as Mick Stranahan discovers that six failed marriages have not killed his ability to fall in love all over again, Carl Hiaasen takes us on a hilarious, romantic, page-turning journey through the warped politics of southern Florida, and through the madness and mayhem created by the human heart.

Christopher Vine Nelson Observed Nelson Institute 0473016214 Nelson has been fortunate. It has kept much of its architectural roots; the past is not all swept away. It is still possible, given a bit of fossicking, to find remains of all six generations of Nelson's European settlement.
This inheritance is the subject of this book. If the result is reminiscent of a family album crammed with portraits of forebears, that is perhaps not unfitting. It makes no claim to be exhaustive; though with over 580 illustrations it may well be exhausting.
It is a quite personal selection of, mostly, the more venerable members of the Nelson family of artefacts. Its purpose, apart from justifying the bulging Vine Archive of sketches, (fellow magpies may sympathise), could be to encourage others to take pleasure in the gentle art of 'Just Looking'.
After nearly thirty years of calling Nelson 'home', this is a way for Christopher Vine to say 'Thank you very much for having me'.
Christopher Vine has a long interest in old building. Before coming to New Zealand in 1964, he was an architect working on historic buildings in England. Since living in Nelson he has been involved with them on a more practical level, propping up his own 1845 cottage - among other projects.
His interest have also included architectural ceramics, murals, and the writing and illustration of various articles for the Nelson Eveing Mail, The Auckaland Star, The Dominion Sunday Tims and various journals. Price:

Claire Finlayson This Thing in the Mirror Craig Potton 1877333182 Art history in New Zealand has been dominated by landscape paintings, but there is a complementary field of portrait painting which, until now, has not received the same attention. This book redresses the balance a little by presenting a selection of self portraits by well-known New Zealand artists.;This Thing in the Mirror is not a comprehensive survey of New Zealand self-portraiture nor a thorough academic study. Instead, in a style intended to appeal to the general reader as well as the art specialist, it seeks to peel back a few layers, offer some illuminating points and ponderings, and drop an anecdote in here or there. At its most basic level this book celebrates and records some of New Zealand's most inventive personalities. Like the best of companions these self-portraits amuse, confound and engage you, and add some warm human lore to the art history shelves. The artists are arranged alphabetically to emphasise the randomness of the selection and also to allow them to sit cheek-by-jowl with interesting and unlikely neighbours. Extended commentaries by the author give an insight into the background of each painting.

Craig Potton Improbable Eden Craig Potton 1877333077 The Dry Valleys of Antarctica are one of the last truly remote places left on earth. With no cover of ice or snow and no rainfall, these dry valleys are "islands" in the midst of the frozen ice of the Antarctic continent, a strange environment of ice-covered lakes that hold some of the planet's purest water, huge expanses of wind-sculpted rock, barren eroded land forms and glaciers that intrude into the edges of the valleys. Access to this unique environment is extremely restricted. This book is built around the landscape photographs of Craig Potton, who gathered the images on two separate trips to Antarctica. The text is provided by Bill Green whose previous non-fiction writing on the Dry Valleys won him the John Burroughs Medal for nature writing in the USA.
